Weird headache types: Coathanger, sex and teeth grinding

Well you learn something new everyday! Here’s the lowdown on some not so common headache types… are you a sufferer?

    Coathanger headaches

According to MigraineAgain, coat hanger headaches are brought on by standing up! You may also suffer from dizziness. They usually last as long as you remain standing – with headache relieved soon after lying down.

There is some thought that bad posture can cause headaches such as these. So for example, sitting hunched over a computer for hours can lead to a headache. Usually however, there are other environmental factors contributing to it, such as dehydration, skipping meals or stress.

Headaches when standing up can also be caused by postural-orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Standing up causes the heart rate to increase, leading to dizziness and fainting as well as headaches.
Treatment for “coathanger headaches” may include drinking more fluids and care with posture; some patients also need to have extra salt and medication.

    Sex headaches

According to the Mayo Clinic, sex headaches are brought on by sexual activity — especially an orgasm. You may notice a dull ache in your head and neck that builds up as sexual excitement increases. Or, more commonly, you may experience a sudden, severe headache just before or during orgasm.
Most sex headaches are nothing to worry about. But some can be a sign of something serious, such as problems with the blood vessels that feed your brain.

There are two types of sex headaches:

    • A dull ache in the head and neck that intensifies as sexual excitement increases
    • A sudden, severe, throbbing headache that occurs just before or at the moment of orgasm

In some people, both types of headaches are combined.

Most sex headaches last at least several minutes. Others may linger for hours or even two to three days.
Many people who have sex headaches will experience them in clusters over a few months, and then they may go for a year or more without having any sex headaches. Up to half of all people with sex headaches experience them over the course of about six months. Some people may only have one attack during their lives.

    Teeth grinding headaches

According to The Migraine Trust, some people grind their teeth during the night and as a result wake with head pain, combined with pain around the ear and jaw, or worse still a migraine.

If you habitually clench or grind your teeth during the night, the muscles that move the jaw can get tired — this leads to muscle spasm and can result in dull pain in the temples, cheeks and jaw, especially first thing in the morning

If this is the case it is worthwhile seeing a dentist as there are special mouth guards (called occlusal splints) which can reduce the teeth grinding. An example of this is the F.O.S. splint – a proven solution to headaches and migraines caused by night time clenching and grinding (bruxism). Find a F.O.S. solution provider near you today.
